Navigating insurance can be tricky.

Below are some important terms to help you understand your insurance coverage.

Premium: this is the monthly payment that you pay to your insurance company. This payment is made regardless of whether you are using your insurance for services by doctors, therapists or your local acupuncturist.

Deductible: Your insurance plan may have a deductible. This means that in addition to your monthly premium you will pay for the service provided by your practitioner. The amount that you will need to pay varies on each plan. This information can often be found on your insurance card. For example, if you have a deductible of $1000, you will need to pay $1000 from your own pocket until insurance will cover any of the expenses.

Insurance Coverage Percentage: Once you have paid the required amount of your deductible your insurance company will then cover your service. However, check how much your insurance will cover. They may cover 100%, 80% 70% 50%, each plan is different so even if your insurance company is going to cover the cost of service you may need to pay a portion to cover the costs.

Co-pay / Co-Insurance: Insurance might pay for all of the services but may ask you to pay a co-pay or co-insurance. This is a small portion of the bill, usually a flat rate. This information can usually be found on your insurance card.
