What to Expect

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment method where sterile, disposable, very fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. These points can either be located along areas of the body called meridians or in specific areas of the muscle. With an acupuncture treatment what we are doing is working with the body's natural healing capabilities. What makes acupuncture so special is you, the patient is the most important part of the healing process. We make sure to take the time and care to fully understand what is going on with the patient, ranging from the current symptom or pain, their lifestyle personal and family medical history and more. This allows us to provide a comprehensive treatment so that we are not only treating the symptom but also uncovering what the cause of the issue might be in the first place.

Ultimately, in acupuncture, we look at the patient and the body as a whole, recognizing the connection of structure, function and movement.

The 5 Step Approach

Medical Intake

We begin the process first with a thorough intake form, looking into past and present conditions, family history, lifestyle, etc. There is a lot that influences our health. The important thing to remember is that even if it doesn't seem like it relates to the current condition the body is very complex and knowing the whole picture gives us a better understanding and allows us to assess the situation better.

This form will be emailed to you in the appointment confirmation email. You will be able to fill this out at your leisure.

Consultation

In our first appointment we will go through the intake form together and go over anything else that may come up. Often while in discussion past conditions, injuries, or various symptoms may come to mind which can help guide us to offer the best treatment for you.

Palpation / Assessment

Next we get you on the massage table and go through a physical assessment. Here we examine various areas of the body, the stomach, neck, hands and feet as well as feeling the pulse. Often our body tells it’s own version of the story and the condition of balance and health so it is essential to get the whole picture.

Treatment

The treatment often consists of using acupuncture needles, however there are many other techniques that can be used that don’t require the insertion of needles. When we do use needles they are sterile, disposable and very thin. Upon insertion of the needle there is the possibility that the patient will feel a warm sensation, heaviness or occasionally a dull ache. All of these sensations are quite normal and often are good indication of that the body is responding well to the treatment.

Plan & Recommendations

After the initial session and treatment we will have a much better idea of how many sessions will be necessary for the condition to improve. Here we will also offer any suggestions or recommendations for at home care, such as exercises, breathing practices, acupressure points or other considerations that can be worked on in your daily life.

How many sessions will it take?

This is a common question, how many sessions is required for the condition to improve. During your visit, we will assess and determine a recommendation based on the duration and severity of the condition as well as your response to the initial treatment.

For example if a condition is more recent and the patients is in relatively good health, 3 to 5 treatments may be sufficient. However, long standing, chronic conditions may require 8 to 10 treatments once to twice a week. The beauty of acupuncture is that it is less invasive and does not cause scarring or trauma to the body, however, it does require a little persistence and patience.

I often give the analogy of exercising and going to the gym. If one is active and had been going to the gym but stopped going for a little while after a few times at the gym they can get back to their athletic performance. However, for someone who hasn’t been to the gym in months, maybe years, it will take a lot more time to get to a healthy, athletic condition.

Suggestions for your first visit

  • It is important to have eaten sometime before the appointment. The concept behind it is that acupuncture works with the energy that your body currently has and so being nourished to provide that energy is essential for a productive session.

  • Please bring a pair of shorts and loose fitting short sleeve shirt to wear during the treatment. We work with the whole body so it is important to be able to access all areas.

  • Please fill out the medical intake form before coming to the first session. This will save us time and allows us to get a sense of you, your history and condition.

We look forward to helping you and bringing you relief.
